“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I discovered how important my small daily rituals were in maintaining a point of calm in the storm. Drinking my regular morning cup of coffee and doing my skincare routine, nourishing my sensitive eyes, skin and neck with calming products. Maintaining these routines and giving my body all the love it needed in this healing process became a ritual that gave me strength to face the day, celebrating my body through touch, taking me from sickness to health. It is incredible how strong our bodies are, carrying us through life. Regardless of whether it is fat, thin, sick or healthy, it is the body we have, and it is fantastic. Our bodies allow us to experience love, passion, euphoria, as well as all the dark and tough times. And despite the darkness, I still want to live my life, and my wonderful body makes that possible.
Every year 9 000 women in Sweden are diagnosed with breast cancer, oftentimes with a very good prognosis. The chance of remission has increased in the past decades, in part due to early detection, but also more effective treatment methods. Many breast cancer tumors are detected through mammograms, before symptoms become apparent. So when you get called in for an appointment, just go.
I have created two patterns for MANTLE. The first is a celebration of the bodies that carry us through life. With the second pattern, I wanted to illustrate what it feels like to have battled breast cancer. With powdery and etheric hues, I wanted to capture a feeling that is so hard to convey. Some of us have scars on our bodies that will stay with us for the rest of our lives, but the feeling of gratitude for being alive, here and now, cannot quite be explained.”
